There are basically 4 types of switchblades:
1. The Godfather (Aka Stiletto Style or Italian Stiletto): This style of automatic knife has a very narrow blade and was designed for self defense - period. It is not and was never intended to be a work knife. The Stiletto style switchblades are great to look at and serve their purpose, but if you are looking for a knife for heavy use, you may wish to consider one of the styles with a wider base.
2. The Out The Front (OTF): These automatic knives do exactly as their name implies. The blade comes out from the front. In most versions available today, OTF style knives all have a safety spring that will minimize any damage from an unexpected triggering. They are great for a quick opening need.
3. The Gravity Knife (Aka Balisong or Butterfly Knife): The gravity knife or butterfly knife is truly unique in the way it opens. While most switchblades use a variety of spring or tension levers to open the blade, the Balisong opens with gravity and a little skill from the user.
4. The Work Autos: The other styles of automatic knives all make great additions to any collection and all have their unique purposes that serve them well. However, if you are looking for a work knife, they may not fit your need. Most of our switchblades fall into the Work Autos category. The broad base on these switchblades, such as the Boker's, The Smith and Wesson's, and the others provide the support needed for daily use, similar to standard pocket knives.
