Knife Throwing Techniques
Throwing
a knife is four dimensional. You must first pick a stance, grip,
throw, and knife. The knife will inevitably turn as it is thrown. Your
first objective should be to find a throw that is comfortable and
replicable. Remember consistancy is key. Who cares if you can nail
that target from twenty feet if it takes twenty tries to do it. A more
impressive feat is to hit the same target fom ten feet every time.
Start short and work your way back. You will notice that there are
more than twice the turns in a twenty foot throw as there are in a ten
foot throw. This is do to gravity having an increasing effect on the
knife causing it to travel a farther distance than an exact straight
line. ex.) A knife thrown at 10 feet might actually travel 10.5
feet, since there is always some amount of arc to a throw(gravity).
Your
stance should be comfortable with the leg that coinsides with your
throwing arm pointing at the target.
Grip is important.
Holding the blade is dangerous if the knife is double edged. A tip I
heard once said to wrap all but the last 1/2 inch of the blade in one
or two layers of electrical tape. Do not do this to an expensive knife
because the glue on the tape can stain a stainless steel knife very
easily don't let the name of the metal fool you. If this happens refer
to the knife care portion of the learnig center for cleaning
instructions.
Once you have developed consistency in your
throw, found a comfortalbe stance and grip, and found a well balanced
knife you are ready to put in the countless hours of practice it takes
to be a pro.
We recomend Hibben Throwing Knives as they
are well balanced and stand up to abuse very well.
