Grant Hawk’s “deadbolt over grabstep” design is a rugged folder with the look and feel of a fine handgun, complete with two sets of grips.

When noted fixed-blade knifemaker Grant Hawk and his son Gavin attended a recent knife show, they came away saying, “We can make a better folder.” They returned to their Idaho City, Idaho shop and shortly thereafter, the D.O.G. became the first Hawk folder.

Driven by logic, and the desire to perfect a dependable locking system which would function properly even with debris in and around the lock, Grant arrived at his highly successful Deadbolt

Over Grabstep (D.O.G.) custom design. The CRKT production D.O.G. incorporates its key features.

The knife is overbuilt to withstand extreme conditions, with a massive open build using 6061 T6 hard anodized aluminum frames. The modified clip point blade uses an oval thumb slot for opening, and is a hefty 0.15” thick. Made of AUS 8 stainless steel, blades are available with Razor-Sharp or Combination Razor-Sharp and Triple-Point™ serrated edges.

Featured is the most advanced deadbolt design we know of, with a CNC machined, spring loaded deadbolt which engages even if dirt holds the blade away from the stop pin. A sealed spring and push rod assembly assures lock-up under all conditions. The deadbolt also holds the blade closed when folded.

Dual lock releases protrude through both frame sides. Tight tolerances and an adjustable blade pivot allow safe one-hand closing.

The D.O.G.’s handle shape is reminiscent of a fine handgun, with a deep finger choil and graceful swell at the butt. Each knife includes two sets of Zytel® grips, traditional checkered, or diagonal fluted, attached with Torx® fasteners.

Finally, Hawk came up a better pocket clip. It is short, so it does not interfere with grip, and its tension is adjustable by a single screw. It can be reversed right to left, and if you decide to remove it, no unsightly attachment holes are exposed. It’s a knife that’s overbuilt, with a rigid fixed-blade feel, and truly different in concept and detail. The combination of dual lock releases, the oval blade thumb slot, and reversible clip result in a knife which is 100% ambidextrous.
