Paul Chen Zatoichi Practical Katana Hanwei

A Practical Plus katana from Paul Chen makes a great econimically responsible training blade. Paul Chen Practical Katanas have always been at the forefront of providing economical yet functional swords to the martial arts community.

To begin training, one must find a sword that can withstand the rigors of initial learning and at the same time be an economically sound choice. Paul Chen swords are an excellent solution to this dilemna. These modern weapons are forged using many traditional techniques. The use of anvils and hammers in favor of machines, and polishing by hand are two of the traditional forging elements Chen insists on using at his forge. It's the best of both worlds because you get a beautifully created sword at a low price.

The blade of this sword is forged from 1566 steel and differentially hardened in the traditional way producing an edge hardness of HRC60 and spine hardness of HRC40. The removeable handle is tightly wrapped in the tradtional style with imitation leather to provide a positive grip that will withstand years of kata or tameshigiri practice.

The tsuba is made of solid metal. The grip is constructed of ABS-covered wood, wrapped to display the simulated ray skin and the menuki. The fittings of the Practical are decorated in a Japanese Dogwood motif.  The scabbard is black laquered finished.  Also included is a cloth protective wrap.

The Paul Chen Practical Katana embodies the classical design elements of the most prolific sword design in history. With it's strong Shinogi Zukuri shape that accentuates the differential heat treatment, these blades are traditionally proportioned to appeal to the collector but they will also perform well in general cutting of hard or soft targets.

In the past, the sword was considered the soul of the samurai warrior. These weapons would be kept in the family and passed from generation to generation. Now you can begin your own family tradition.

These blades are very sharp and can cause injury. They are not toys and should be treated with respect.
