The Scottish Highlanders carried the Targe, begining in the 13th century. For over four centuries the Targe remained the primary defense of the Highlanders being adopted by all of Scotland.Their fierce fighting tactics made the targe famous. A simple circular design coupled with light weight made this shield easty to manuver and use with the sword. The center spike made this shield another tool to be used offensively. When the Jacobites were defeated at Colloden Scotland banned the use of swords, targes, and kilts and they faded into history.
